Members of opposing sexes flirt shamelessly. Food, trash, and the occasional fist flies haphazardly above the rumble of the constant chatter.

Such is the daily scene of the high school cafeteria, and a grim picture it is. In fact, this central part of the social life of a high school student may give an overly negative view of the future, to student and observer alike. To one of the multitude of teenagers in the cafeteria, the question lurks in the subconscious: Is this how it always is? If, as we are so often told, high school and its trials prepare us to face the reality of life after graduation, will we be forever dealing with cliques, bullies, breakups, crappy food, and all of those other ever-present high school clichés? Probably- hopefully- not, but it is a very discomfiting thought.

A guest to the school, or even one of the teachers who dutifully stands watch during the lunch period, may draw an equally dismal conclusion about what is to come; and in this case, these opinions are loudly and repeatedly voiced. “This,” they say, “is the face of the future?” They look at the masses of chatting, fighting, flirting teenagers, and see with glum resignation what terrible hands their country will fall into when they are past their prime. Never mind the handful of students who are genuinely smart, dedicated, and prepared to make something of themselves; never mind that it is these dedicated people- the minority of our generation, as of any other- that will truly make a difference in the future, not the larger group who have a great influence on popular culture but will ultimately hold little to no significance. Here, in our gruesome element, our individual skills and aspirations cannot be seen; We can only be interpreted as a whole, and that whole is far from a pleasant one.

Whether student or outsider, one can only hope that life is different from the unpleasant picture painted by the high school lunch.

I lost a baby tooth today.

And I still have two more.
Just thought you might all like to know how pathetic I am.

Winnar is me.

Not that this blog has been dead or anything.
Okay, fine. I've been up for a few hours doing anything but a horrendous English essay, at 10:00 I'm off to my former flute teacher's house to practice Christmas music probably until I have to come back for 12, because at 12:30 I have my first driving lesson which should be interesting since I've only been out with my dad for about 4 hours in all. He gave us tickets to their next concert, on the following night, and said that he would continue the lesson during intermission. And yes, I know there wouldn't be an intermission.
Yeah, that's about it.

Oh I'm alive, and how I know it

Today we visited Gram for her birthday. The building's all big and nice and the classrooms are huge- their own bathrooms in some cases- and there's a computer lab. Seriously, what? The shower confused me very much. But this van was made for drivin', and that's just what it'll do...
12:35
In retrospect, eating at a Sonic Drive-In just because there are basically none back in New England was kind of a bad idea. Before, the commercials just made me think, "Wow, these people need to learn the concept of precise marketing." Now I'll think, "ARGH! That place was so good! But I'll probably never eat there again! T_T"
1:59
Is that a FIREWORKS STORE?! PULL OVER! SERIOUSLY, RIGHT NOW!
2:21
Les Miserables has an anime.
I'm watchin' it, yes.
But it's centered on Cosette (hence the subtitle: Shoujo Cosette >_>). You better not villainize my precious Eponine, bahstahds. >O
3:29
WTF? Are those palm trees or something? We're not even in Florida yet! Wait, where *are*-
"Welcome. We're Glad Georgia's On Your Mind."
...oh.
...:headdesk:
3:42
I think rain is wonderful.
5:07
McDonald's makes surprisingly good cookies.
There are some really picturesque fields in... ah... still Georgia, apparently... but they're offset by this big factory in the distance. Smoke rises from the pillars and seeps into the sky... gloomy.
5:14
Note to self:
The Ouran girl's uniform would be a fun and kinda easy cosplay.
If I do that Lucky Star cheerleader costume, I should go for the girl with long orange-brown-y hair and a headband so I can be lazy about my hair color.
5:36
"Now entering Florida" sign.
I still need yellow pom-poms.
5:51
I glanced out the window, vaguely hoping to see something aside from miles of highway, generic trees, and billboards. The rain had ceased, and left behind a clouded sky as a reminder, but-
"Oh, a rainbow!" I pointed, and Dad looked over right away.
"What? What'd she say?" Mom shouted immediately. I twitched.
"RAIN. BOW. IN. SKY." I had little patience for her inability to hear me at any time.
"Ohh!" she cried once Dad had translated. "Pretty! It must be a sign that we'll have a great time at Disney!"
"Or maybe it's a sign that it just rained," I muttered darkly, turning back to my writing.
9:34
Oh, I was off the laptop for a while. But oh man... David Tennant...
;3;
Doctor Who is lub. Oh so much lub.
We're in Florida. It's hot with palm trees. I expected it to be... otherwise, shall we say. Like, everyone says that, but I tend to imagine that they're just saying so because it seems like something you're supposed to say.
But no, it actually is hot and rather muggy. It's almost 10 PM, and it's 79 degrees out. We have indeed driven by palm trees. It is, in fact, tropical.
Huh.

Road to Disney: Log 1

06-01
11:25 AM
Got up early and set off driving at around 7:30. We've been through Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York already, and are now driving through New Jersey. Maybe it's because I've been reading, writing, or watching anime the whole time, but I can't really tell the difference. All roads and buildings.
We drove by a seaport some distance away. The cranes looked like brightly-colored giraffes. Though that was probably my poor eyesight talking.
A plane flies overhead. From my point of view, it's moving so slowly that it's practically suspended in the air. Still, I reflect on how much more quickly we'd be at our destination if we were on one of those planes.
Not that I really mind. Long drives are kind of relaxing, and I have more than enough to amuse myself with.
Well, back to PPC-writing.

12:09 PM
Jimmy and I are watching Versus.
xD.
Best movie ever. Hermione is her name, not Mio or Mione or Hermi or any number of other variations. Unless it's a nickname a character actually uses on a regular basis, don't even think about it. It's quite annoying.
In original fiction, obviously, you don't have to worry about whether it's canon. But nicknames can still be irritating, so be careful. Try to think about whether the character in question would mind having a pet name, and whether the characters around him/her would actually use one. Don't use it too much in the narration itself, and make sure it's not stupid-sounding. If the character has a short name as it is, a nickname is pretty much pointless.
Writers and their characters have a special relationship, but in the story itself, your love for them shouldn't come through and bludgeon the reader to death, and constantly referring to them with pet names will do just that.

DS GET!

Jimmy's DS Lite came in today- did I even mention that story? Oh. INFO DUMP TIME:
Well, apparently Jimmy, lord of breakage, managed to basically snap his DS in two. o_o; Not on purpose. With heavy hearts, we called Nintendo to see if there was any chance they'd do anything, fully prepared to pay up for a new one.
Within a few days, we received a prepaid package in which to mail them Jimmy's DS. And about a week later, they mailed it back, fully repaired, complete with replaced screen covers, for zip money.
Nintendo's amazing.
"But why do you care?" you ask. "It's your brother's DS, not yours, and everyone knows you don't care about others."
Well, that's pretty rude, but you're right. n_n; I was letting him use mine while we waited. I tried to recall, but all that came to mind was a conversation about how a weed could have every bit of the beauty of a flower) sprang up amidst overgrown grass that pushed its way determinedly through cracks in the driveway, and the shutters hung off of the clouded Victorian windows as though barely clinging to life. My eyes stayed on it long after we'd passed by as I contemplated what sort of secrets it might have hid, were this the sort of town where interesting things ever happened.

**********

As I walked, relishing the scent of summer that brushed against my cheek with the wind, I stared at the sky and casually tried to imagine she wasn't behind me. Walking at a relaxed pace, I wasn't trying to lose her, yet somehow nothing short of exaggerated baby steps was slow enough. I held back a sigh. The strange sort of beauty of the calm uneventful town seemed marred somehow by the fact that the sun behind us revealed her shadow falling over mine. That, and her footsteps and dramatic huffing and puffing served as constant reminders that she was a few steps behind me at all times, even when the flow of chatter ceased for a while. There was something symbolic about that, or so I imagined. Thus musing, my eyes wandered along with my mind so that I handily failed to notice the small but rapidly approaching pothole. The distance my foot fell was barely affected, but it was still just enough to throw off my sense of balance, and startled by the change, I gave a tiny gasp and stumbled almost imperceptibly. From behind me, the difference mustn't have even been discernible, and my mother failed to notice my blunder, which I quickly recovered from, and I took pains to continue to amble along as though it had never happened.
Perhaps there was something symbolic about that, too.

In any case-

-I certainly mustn't be very good company. I say those people are losers. This... is Shadow's VDDs- Classic Edition.*
I have no idea why this memory is still with me, being of a strange and utterly inconsequential nature, but the earliest dream I can remember is one I had when I believe I was about five, in the summer. In it, I was in a nondescript snowy field with a lot of hills. Nothing too creative there. Suddenly, I noticed that I was being chased by a rather large lion (maybe I was a bit slow back then?). Of course, I fled immediately, eventually falling through a neat round hole Alice-style. The lion followed me, but landed calmly next to me and explained in a British-sounding voice that he wasn't really such a bad guy after all. We became buddies and came out of the hole, which apparently was a tunnel, to find a tree on which wooden sleds had just sprouted. Taking the next logical step, we jumped onto one and began to ride down a steep hill. Wheee~
Ah, but then I believe I was woken up by an ambulance driving by. And why I remember that too, we shall never know.

*If you haven't caught on to this, incidentally, the introductions are intended to be read in a Colbert-esque style. Her posture is soon broken as she sits up to adjust her shirt so that it better accents her figure. I notice with morbid fascination that her shoes, her purse, and her hairpiece all match. Red with white polka dots. The exact same shade. The teacher makes an irritated remark and she pouts in what is clearly intended to be an attractive way. To me, it seems to fail miserably, but then I notice tiny red hearts fluttering mothlike around the heads of the nearby male students.
An inward groan is interrupted when one of them, while attempting to "subtly" flex, knocks the books from the corner of my desk. I watch him- I can see it, it's so obvious, why does nobody else see this- I watch him glance at her face, gauging her reaction- will it please her more if he is a gentleman and picks them up, or turns on the cool and does nothing? Her titter of approval points to the latter, and my books and I promptly drop off of his radar. I scramble on the dirty floor before the proud queen, gathering my scattered belongings in a resentful silence.
She is feigning disinterest in the boys' attention, I know, but in reality it is she who needs them, and desperately. Small children tirelessly chased each other around the fountain at the center of the square in an oddly defined path.
But still, he needed information. Seeking out a random target, his eyes settled on a woman in a plaid blue bonnet and a decidedly generic brown dress. He walked toward her cautiously, noting as he approached her strange manner of movement. Step west. Step west. Step west. Step east. Step east. Step east. Step north. Pause. Look east. Step south. Step west. Step west. Step west... He watched her, fascinated (and even more so by the fact that she seemed to take no notice). Then, shaking himself from his reverie, he forced himself to tap politely on her shoulder. "Excuse me." She turned to him in that same distressingly mechanical manner. "Can I ask you a few questions?"
A moment's pause, then she spoke. "It's always so quiet around here... seems like nothing will ever change," she remarked faintly.
"I see. But do you know anything about this man, by any chance?" He brandished the photograph.
"It's always so quiet around here... seems like nothing will ever change," she repeated firmly, not so much as sparing the picture a glance. The Hero blinked.
"I just thought you might know something, he may have been from around here-"
"It's always so quiet around here... seems like nothing will ever change."
"Why do you keep saying that?" His nerves beginning to fray slightly, The Hero fought to keep his voice under control.
"It's always so quiet around here..."
"...seems like nothing will ever change. I know, you told me." His frustration grew. "Are you even listening to me?"
"It's always so quiet around here... seems like nothing will ever change."
The Hero decided to go out on a limb.
"You're a filthy whore."
"It's always so quiet around here... seems like nothing will ever change." The woman's left eye twitched slightly.
"Thanks for your help," The Hero said, hurrying away before he was forced to hear her reply. Glancing over his shoulder, he saw her turn away listlessly and continue her fruitless journey. Step west. Step west. Step west. He shuddered, praying inwardly that the rest of the town's inhabitants would not be the same.

Oh, but significantly less awesome...

...is the fact that our... beloved Mrs. Flaherty wants us to play it for all of our idiot-faced classmates.

Dun-dun... dun-dun...

Nolan's scream was the best part of the entire pops concert.
Which I think was rather awesome. Mom had said she would do it even though she wasn't really sure when she would give us the DVDs (since I can't afford it, I need money for AB07), so I was going to get all six Princess Tutu DVDs~ But then, when we were about to order... :muffled sob:

We've had an incredible response to our "ADV Abundance of Savings" event. There is a wretched genre of fanfiction known as the 'sugarhigh fic.' It is inevitably written by twelve-year-old girls who blame the script format, juvenile humor and general stupidity on 'I WUZ ON LOTSA SUGAR WHEN I WROTE THIS LOLZ!!!1' Worse yet, they usually garner quite a few "lol so funnie! writ more plz"-type reviews.
I must now confess to a sin. When I was of age, and my intelligence was still working its way out of the depths of my pre-teen mind...
I wrote one such monstrosity.
Its name was "Adventures in Happyland." It was a YGO! fanfic. The entire cast awoke to find themselves in the title location, and the heroes generally proceeded to frolic about whilst the villains groaned "humorously" in the background.
I still have it somewhere, probably on the other computer which I'm too lazy to turn on right now. Someday, perhaps, I shall reveal a bit of its horror to you, the readers (or rather reader).
For now, I felt it was a sin that could not be hidden any longer.

More fun with forgetting about things

There's a Flashback label, isn't there?
Ah, right, I meant to use old posts from other blogs or things that I had long ago, when I was an even crappier and more annoying person. ;D Forgot about that, naturally.
I shall revive it... tomorrow. It's unnecessary and it creates an awkward break in the action. There are a few better ways to go about this:
Make reference to the character's appearance in sentences in which something else is taking place, in a reasonably spaced-out manner, using sentences like these:

As she spoke, she tugged viciously at a strand of long brown hair.
He wilted under the furious gaze of her sinister dark eyes.
She quickened her pace, her long red coat flapping in the breeze and her worn boots slapping against the ground.

Don't do this too much, though, or it becomes annoying. When done right, this can give a good effect of gradually revealing the character's appearance.
If you must give a full-on description, don't just throw it in the middle of the first chapter. Instead, describing him/her as another character takes the character's appearance in is the best way to go about it- and even then, it should still be brief. For instance:

The guard looked the strange woman up and down with growing derision, taking in her wild brown hair, her gaudy overcoat, and the slightly intoxicated look in her dark, beady eyes.

Without seeming too unnatural or going on for more than a sentence, I've given the reader a basic feel for her appearance. As they read on, they should hopefully get a more detailed image through (ideally) subtle clues.

Try to avoid characters who are pretty just for the sake of being pretty, but when they're necessary (like an idealized damsel in distress, for example), be sure not to abuse words like "beautiful" and "stunning," and avoid too many metaphors. Just choose words that imply beauty without bluntly stating it:

Her small, birdlike frame shivered gently as she pulled the blanket more tightly about her with slender hands. Long strands of hair fell across her face and stole away the beads of water that clung to her dark eyelashes.

It's best to have a specific "kind" of beauty in mind- dark beauty, strong, caring, or so on. The above example aims for fragility.

:eltiT

!worromot ...niaga ti od ll'I kniht I .nuf si gnitirw tuoba lla ta gnihtyna wonk I ekil gnitcA
.pots ot evah ll'taht kniht I hguohtla ,oot nuf yldlim si nosaer elbaviecnoc on rof sdrawkcab sgniht gnipyT
.NUF ERA SGNIHT NUF

The scary thing about television...

...is how it can divide up your entire day into half-hour periods.

SUPER LAME POETRY LADY

Kinda tempted to post some of my best and worst poetry.
